Se suele considerar a Antístenes el primer filósofo que sería reconocido posteriormente con el nombre de cínico. Fue discípulo de Sócrates, al que admiró hasta el punto de recorrer todos los días 40 estadios desde el Pireo hasta Atenas para escucharlo. Diógenes Laercio (VI, 3), una de las pocas fuentes que tenemos sobre él, escribe que acostumbraba a conversar en el gimnasio de Cinosargo. Aquí aparece en Hermes en la Academia increpado por Iseo, un orador que con otros ciudadanos manifestará una animadversión contra él:
Eres la causa de que algunos jóvenes en vez de trabajar por la ciudad desprecien sus estamentos y no sepan observar las diferencias de clase. Te atreves a decir que el sabio no ha de seguir las leyes y que huyan de la política. Eres la ruina de esta ciudad (p.28).
Vestía de una manera muy sencilla, con un manto viejo, llevando un zurrón y un palo, a modo de bastón. Sostenía que la virtud basta para lograr la felicidad al alcance de cualquiera, por lo que no hay que dejarse tentar por las riquezas y la política. Esta posición de rechazo a las instituciones generó antipatía y aversión en la ciudad.
Más famoso se hizo Diógenes y es el más conocido como prototipo de la persona que necesita muy poco para vivir. En la novela aparece como preceptor de los hijos de Jeníades, un comerciante de Corinto.
—Me preguntas si me avergüenza llevar así a estos chicos cuyo padre me ha encomendado su educación. Te diré que quiero hacer de ellos dos Heracles, para que sean capaces de afrontar todas las contingencias, que tengan el imperio sobre sí mismos y que sean reyes. Por eso los enseño para que se habitúen a cuidar de sí mismos, sin sirvientes, que vistan sin afectación y se contenten con una dieta mínima. Los hombres deberían escoger lo que la naturaleza recomienda, escúchame bien, ateniense, y no lo que vuestras leyes imponen.
Diógenes desprecia las normas y convencionalismos de la ciudad. Alexis lo amenaza:
—A tipos como tú, hay que tenerlos lejos de la ciudad para que su mala simiente no arraigue en las mentes de los jóvenes. Atente a las consecuencias, porque podemos iniciar un proceso legal contra ti por haberte burlado de las leyes y de los dioses.
Los atenienses estaban acostumbrados a enfrentar ideas y contrastarlas, pero el respeto a las leyes de la ciudad era la base de la convivencia y no debía ponerse en duda. Ese rechazo a las normas y a las formas establecidas fue la mayor razón del rechazo de los cínicos y su desprestigio.
