Los protagonistas de nuestra historia ya tienen un indicio para investigar sobre Peru Aguirre, el autor del escrito que han encontrado. Han decidido ir a buscar la casa de la calle Colón de Larreátegui, donde vivió Don Pablo Bilbao y quizá también Peru Aguirre. Allí van a pasar un poquito de miedo.
Les acompaña Lucía, la hermana de Javier, porque todavía no van solos por la ciudad. Mientras ella va a comprar un libro allí cerca, nuestros amigos se meten en el portal y avanzan por un pasillo mal iluminado hasta que, de pronto, una voz los detiene y los asusta. ¿Quién será? Es el portero. Le explican lo que están buscando y él les indica, un tanto enfadado, que suban al quinto piso, donde vive un familiar, un sobrino.
Es un señor mayor que al principio está serio, pero, a medida que le cuentan lo que están buscando, se interesa y les da una valiosa información. Le explican que han encontrado una carta de Peru, de hace muchos años cuando iba a hacer la Primera Comunión, y un papel con un dibujo en el que pone RARA AVIS. Le preguntan si él sabe qué es eso.

—Esa red guardaba objetos valiosos: joyas, libros, documentos… Casi siempre en iglesias, porque estaban abiertas muchas horas. Los escondían y cuando consideraban que el peligro había pasado, los recogían y los devolvían.
Se miraron asombrados. En un momento se les aclararon un montón de incógnitas. ¡Las letras que no entendían eran iglesias!
La pista es importantísima, porque ahora ya saben que las letras son iglesias y que era allí donde escondían los objetos valiosos. Se enteran de que Peru Aguirre ya no vive, pero su intuición ha sido buena porque vivió en la misma casa que Don Pablo Bilbao y ahora su sobrino.
Cuando ven que el señor está cansado, le dan las gracias.
